Thoughts from South Africa on the Vancouver Olympics

I received this email from a friend of Charl's in South Africa. It's hilarious, and to get him back, I'm making it public. Enjoy.

Hockey? Oh, hockey ...... Ja, well no fine. We also have hockey in South Africa, we don’t play it yet, but we do HAVE it. In SA we mostly use those hockey sticks to keep the crowd at bay when we have one of 2000 annual strikes, there’s always a reason for the ANC to strike against the ANC in SA. But in the end the ANC keeps on voting for the ANC. (Is this making sense?) Funny thing is that South Africa always ends up playing in the finals at world events, just just not making it. I don’t know how we get there, but we always do end up playing either Australia or Nieu Zeeland in the finals. We hardly ever win the finals, but all I know is that the Australians are regarded as the reigning world champions.

Just to show you I have my ear against the train track; I DO KNOWWWW (yep, news travels far) that Canada’s hockey team did not do so well against the You Es Ayy in the first game. Hope your team can make amends in the last stages of the games. The only reason why the South Africans were not invited to the winter games is because winter seems to have skipped Canada this year and we have more winter here at the moment than what you have. If this is your winter I do not want to see your summer. How can you have winter games without snow? I remember the winter games in Japan when they had to cart in thousands of tons of snow per helicopter because there was no snow. You can always send a small note to your northern neighbours asking for some snow. How do you cope without snow? Do they put wheels under the skid’s? And what about all the newly bought winter gear when everyone is busy sun tanning? I believe your ice skating was changed to roller skating. The biggest competition was “find us a speck of snow and win a Mercedes.”

I also do not understand the Canadian triathlon. Ten girls run into the forest with GUNS and only ONE emerges .....

As I have said : Ja well no fine. Good to hear from you, enjoy the sun, summer is on its way.

PS - "Ja, well no fine." means something like "OK" or "whatever" or something similar in slang down there
